Thought to be of John Wastell, stable manager to the 3rd Duke of Grafton.
John Wastell was born in Yorkshire, 1736. Educated at Cambridge, where he met the 3rd Duke of Grafton. Wastell was a member of the Jockey Club and managed the Duke’s stables in conjunction with the trainer Robert Robson. He kept meticulous trial books for the Duke and also bred his own race horses, his most successful horse being Scotia, winnner of the 1802 Oaks. There is a painting by the artist Benjamin Marshall showing Wastell along with the winning jockey and Robert Robson, as well as a jockey lad. Wastell died in 1811, just 8 months after his old friend, the 3rd Duke.
