Antonio David, born in Venice, gained fame as the official artist of the exiled Stuart dynasty in Rome.  He painted the Jacobite dynasty and their supporters in Europe for over twenty years.  His portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’, was painted in 1732.  It depicts a proud young prince, upholding the Stuart belief in their right to reign in Great Britain.  His work was much copied and circulated among supporters of the Stuart family claim to the throne.
