Born Edinburgh, 1943. Painter in oil and watercolour, printmaker and teacher. Specialises in strongly coloured, vibrant landscape and still life, generally of flowers. Educated Watson’s College and Edinburgh Academy, he studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art under Gillies and Philipson 1960-65, being awarded the Andrew Grant Scholarship enabling him to visit Spain in 1965, the same year as his first solo exhibition in Edinburgh. Took up an appointment as lecturer in printmaking at Gray’s School of Art in 1968 and head of fine art in 1986. Began painting full-time in 1995, since when his work has become increasingly abstract, his technique looser without losing pictorial authenticity. Regular exhibitor RA, RSA, RSW. Elected RSW, ARSA, RSA 1993. Represented in Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Perth Art Gallery, City of Edinburgh Collection among many others.
