Born Forfarshire; died Edzell, Angus. Painter in oil and watercolour of genre, still life and portraits but principally landscape. Until at least 1886 he lived at various addresses in Dundee and by 1889 had moved to Edzell. After leaving school he was apprenticed to a chemist but, in his own words, 'could never keep his hands frae the brushes'. Abandoning pharmaceuticals, he became associated with a designer-painter and some designs made at this time are in an RC church in Dundee.
