Born in London, 30 May. Painter in watercolour and pencil, stalking scenes and wildlife. Lived in Dumfriesshire. Was a pupil and friend of the artist and naturalist George Lodge. Working mostly in watercolour, his favourite subjects were Highland stalking scenes but was equally proficient at portraying the birds and mammals of Scotland, generally painted on a small scale with finely delineated detail. He leased a deer forest for stalking and sketching purposes in various parts of the west coast for many years although most of his best work was done in the Blackmount area of Argyll. Illustrated several books including Patrick Chalmers's Mine Eyes to the Hills. The Stalking Letters and Sketches of V.R. Balfour-Browne, first published in 1978, was an immediate success, providing a fine illustrative ccount of his oeuvre. Prints of his work, often produced during his lifetime in circular form to simulate th view from a telescope, have always been in demand. He is recognized as one of the finest Scottish sporting and wildlife artists of any period and arguably the finest painter of red deer. Exhibitions of his work were held annually during his lifetime in London, often shared with the English wildlife artist Barrington-Browne.

All four watercolours are signed with the artist's monogram V.B-B.
