Born Inverness, 20 Nov; died Beaminster, Dorset. Landscape painter in oil and watercolour, and monochrome. Educated at Reading and Glasgow Universities where he read engineering before studying at Edinburgh College of Art 1945-50. As a student he was influenced by Sir William Gillies and Leonard Rosoman. Developed an interest in panoramic landscapes during war service as an artillery surveyor. Awarded Andrew Grant Fellowship in painting 1953-1955. Vice-principal and head of fine art at Gloucestershire College of Art (Cheltenham) 1960--1972. Head of Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen 1972-1987.
During WW2 as a surveyor with the Royal Artillery he obtained many long distance views from hill tops later used in his work. From 1949-1952 he painted direct from landscapes but from 1953-1955 became semi-abstract, depicting fantasy landscapes. from 1955 he returned again to work directly from the view before him. His prime concern was lighting and colour. Member of the Royal West of England Academy.
Represented in Aberdeen AG, Dundee AG and Glasgow AG and many private collections.
