Visualise On Your Wall

Born Mid Calder, Midlothian 2 Feb; died Edinburgh 26 Nov. Painter in oil of landscapes and animal subjects, especially scenes involving working horses. Educated George Watson’s College, studied art at Board of Manufacturer’s School, Edinburgh and Antwerp under Verlat. On his return worked in the RSA Life School. Painted many works in Stirling, also in the Hebrides, Holland, Belgium and North Africa. Won golf medal at the Antwerp International Exhibition and was a member of the International Société des Beaux Arts, Paris 1924. Large works were commissioned by both the King of Italy and the Prince of Bavaria. His paintings had charm, capturing the spirit of the heavy horses as they worked on farms and under dappled sunlight in woodlands. Caw found his work ‘effective in design, good in colour and very powerfully painted’.

Represented in Aberdeen AG, Glasgow AG, Kirkcaldy AG, Edinburgh City collection, International Gallery of Modern Art Venice, Chadwick Museum Bolton, Nuneaton AG in New Zealand.

Elected ARSA 1908, RSA 1921.
