Born Dalry, Ayrshire 20 Feb; died Dalry 5 Oct. Painter in oil and watercolour, landscapes, especially Argyll, Loch Awe and Loch Fyne; also etcher. Served his time as a lithographic artist in Glasgow, subsequently illustrator with the Glasgow Citizen. Widely travelled, visiting Japan in 1911. Prolific painted in both oil and watercolour with a simple direct vision. His finest work has a unity - visual, technical and emotional - which, in the words of his obituary, 'places it among the finest landscapes produced in Scotland'. Enjoyed wide expanses of loch or moorland painted against a backcloth of distant hills,. Employed a bright palette in which strong blues, greens and yellows were dominant, and was notably successful in his depiction of snow. Member, London Society of 25. Elected ARSA 1900, RSW 1908, RI 1920, RSA 1925. Exhibited in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Europe and the USA as well as RSA (70), RSW (11), GI (122), AAS, RI (3) and L (16). Represented ni Glasgow AG (9), Greenock AG, Lillie AS (Milngavie) and Perth AG.
