Born Berwick-on-Tweed, Sep 19; died Edinburgh March 23. Watercolour painter of marine subjects, landscapes, including many golfing subjects in which the figure are unusually well drawn, and portraits. He was also commissioned to paint Berwick and Northumbrian scenes for posters and carriage decoration for the London and North Eastern Railway. Trained in London and Academie Julien in Paris. On his return he became assistant master at Newcastle School of Art 1883-89, leaving to become Headmaster at Hawick School of Art 1889-99. From his time in the Borders, he turned increasingly to marine subjects and it is for these that he is best known. Worked mainly around Northumberland and Berwickshire but also in the vicinity of Gullane where he eventually lived. Painted sailing ships and warships in strong colour and line. One of his marine scenes was acquired by Edward VI and he was official artist on the Canadian tour of George VI in 1939. Exhibited RA (1), RSA (15), RSW (8) and GI (5).
