Born Edinburgh; died St Abbs, Berwickshire. Landscape figure and portrait painter. Husband of Janet Boe (of Biggar) and father of George Jackson Hutchison and Maud Hutchison. After his school days he began work as a seal engraver but this was soon abandoned in favour of painting. Studied at the Board of Manufacturers School of Art, Edinburgh. Painter in oil and watercolour, concentrating on children in interiors and paddling on sun filled beaches, illustrating the strong influence of MacTaggart. He was extremely sympathetic in his treatment of childhood which ‘if somewhat literal, is fresh and individual’. Awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon for his ‘Bairnies, cuddle doon’. Both in technique and in the way in which his composition was treated his work followed closely that of the Hague School while in his later work the influence of Joseph Israels is very apparent. He was prolific and has remained extremely popular, enjoying a market reputation that currently surpasses almost all his contemporaries. During many summers he painted at Carnoustie and latterly at Coldingham. Represented in Kelvingrove AG, Glasgow, Greenock AG, Walker AG, Liverpool, Paisley Art Institute, RSA and Toronto AG (Canada).

Elected RSW 1893, ARSA 1901, RSA 1911. Exhibited RA (55), RSA (184), RSW (118), GI (113) and AAS.
