Born in 1971 to Scottish & Dutch parents. Brought up in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, & attended Edinburgh College of Art from where he graduated in 1991 with an MA Honours degree in Fine Art. First solo London show in 1997. He uses friends & relatives as models. Regards his paintings as primarily aesthetic experiences rather than illustrations of pre-conceived narratives.

The paintings are enigmatic and alluring. Rooted in the great Western art traditions of the past, they reference the gravitas of Rembrandt and the drama of Caravaggio, whilst achieving a startlingly contemporary relevance. Steeped in perpetual twilight, Gatherer’s protagonists are slick, immaculately dressed young professionals, present in tableaux. They inhabit enclosed, brooding spaces that quietly hint at decadence and sensual pleasures. It is small wonder that Gatherer has established an impressive international standing and an ever-increasing number of collectors across the globe.

Successful shows in London, New York and in Scotland at the McEwan Gallery; with an ever-widening following of collectors, and with a rising commercial value he is established as one of Scotland’s most exciting young painters.
